Indie Game Review: Super Smash Land

Posted by on September 26, 2011 at 2:15 pm

Anybody who’s anybody has played the original Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64. And you’d all be lying to me if you’ve never had your hands caress the plastic frame of a Gameboy. So what would happen if those two were matched together on a dating service? I’ll tell you what would happen — nothing. They’re incompatible. However, Dan Fornace had the brilliant idea to develop a “demake” of Super Smash Bros. for the Gameboy. Wait, what?

Super Smash Land is marked as “An epic demake of the classic Super Smash Bros.” The PC game is absolutely free (donations are welcome) and plays like a legitimate Gameboy game. Everything about SSL screams old school, from the 8-bit music that you will recognize immediately, to the simplified characters and levels. If there’s one nostalgic piece that brought me back to my childhood, it was the frustration. You know, you’re about to body check Pikachu but accidentally time it perfectly for him to shock you to an oblivion. Kudos to you Dan Fornace for making my blood boil again.

Nostalgia really makes the game. One option that will get all of your competitive juices flowing is the ability to play as Mega Man — after you unlock him. Perhaps some day the capability to play versus online will come to light. Until then, enjoy beating my score on the leader board!
