Gotham City Impostors Review – Already a Candidate for Shooter of the Year?

Posted by on February 24, 2012 at 12:20 pm

When it comes to Batman themed games very few have actually been any good, the most recent ‘Arkham’ titles being the only two of note, but if you don’t mind getting all silly-like, Gotham City Impostors is probably right up there with the best of them.

The cool thing is it doesn’t take itself seriously, not even one little, tiny bit. Honestly. But that’s great because it’s not marketed as a serious game for hardcore gamers, it’s been hyped up as a wacky, off the cuff shoot-’em-up that celebrates everything fun and crazy about the Batman universe and to that it duly delivers.

Quite often companies like Warner Bros. look to milk the ol’ cash cow good and dry, but with GCI it’s clear that wasn’t the aim of this little project. They’ve genuinely put their full weight behind what is quite possibly one of the most fun shooters ever made. It feels a lot like Call of Duty but its pacy gameplay and frantic action make for something quite different. For starters there’s a great amount of customization options to make your Joker or Bat look as homemade as you like, with five different body types ranging from girl to skinny dude to super-mega heavy brute. As you level up more options become available and you can either choose to spend the in-game costume coins or purchase items directly from PSN/ XBL.

The weapons and gadgets available are some of the best and possibly craziest you’ll ever come across, reminding me somewhat of the cool weapons in early shooters like Doom or Quake. Trust me when I say there’s nothing better than shooting a flying Bat out of the sky mid dive-bomb! Your weapon and gadget loadouts are customizable, with more custom slots becoming available as you level up, providing you with ample loadout options to suit any given situation. There’s also plenty of mod and skin options too, all of which unlock as you level up.

Being that GCI is a purely online experience you’d expect that the devs had worked flat out to ensure the best possible gaming experience and that’s indeed the case here. Although it might take an age to get into the game (more on that in a minute) once you are in it’s one of the best shooters around at the moment. Had this game been ready at the same time as Battlefield 3 and CoD MW3, this would have given them a run for their money. Gameplay is fast, rediculously entertaining and above all just damn good fun; something that is sorely lacking in either of the aforementioned mega-titles.

Like I previously mentioned, there are some issues, but with a game that’s only been out for 2 1/2 weeks that’s forgiveable. It’s also forgiveable because Gotham City Impostors has managed to avoid the rock star press treatment that the big boys at Activision and EA give their games, meaning the expectation hasn’t outweighed the experience. Don’t get me wrong, the matchmaking issues are a huge pain in the ass, but once you get into a match you’ll quickly learn to put up with a little waiting around. I’m sure there’s a saying somewhere to describe that situation!

All in all this game freaking rocks! I’m not going to lie, I’ve been hooked since I first saw the trailers back in January and now that I’ve spent some time with it I love it even more. So rather than me just telling you everything about the game and risk spoiling your experience, here’s what I’ve got to say; for not much more than the price of a coffee and bagel you can get this little gem from your XBLA or PSN and trust me when I say it’s the bargain of the century. So what are you waiting for? Get it now!

Oh, and if that isn’t quite enough for ya the upcoming DLC/ Patch is absolutely free, adding even more cool stuff to a game bursting with… well… cool stuff. How ’bout that then!
