They’re pretty excited, I guess… But what does that really mean?

On a recent blog post from Bethesda Softworks, it has been announced that on October 3rd, they were proud to present a new studio based in Austin, Texas, sharing company with Arkane Studios, another Bethesda property. The new facility, named Battlecry Studios, will be the latest under the Bethesda/Zenimax hallmark, with the former head of Bioware’s Austin Division, Richard Vogel, as the head of this new studio. Vogel, if you didn’t know already, was affiliated with previous titles like Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies, and most recently, Star Wars: The Old Republic.

“I have always admired and respected Bethesda’s approach to making great, original games,” said Vogel. “It’s a belief and passion I share, and I’m looking forward to building a team of high quality developers who want to bring that same commitment and creative energy to the games we’ll be creating.”

“We are very pleased to have someone with Rich’s vast experience join us at Bethesda,” said Vlatko Andonov, President of Bethesda Softworks. “Rich has a history of building and managing talented development teams and bringing high quality games to market, and we look forward to working with him on a new exciting project.”

There have been no hints at future projects to be headed by Battlecry, and there are no real details as of yet as to what the studios development direction will be. Taking Vogel’s experience into account, it might be safe to say they’re looking into other properties on a broad, possibly even MMO-based market, though The Elder Scrolls Online is still being developed exclusively under Zenimax Online, a separate branch from Battlecry. Take what you will from the information, but expect rumors, rants, and expectations to pile up quickly.

This new addition to Bethesda will be the second studio to be opened in Austin, joining Arkane Studios (Arx Fatalis, Dishonored). Any other information about the studio indicates that it is still hiring out for various key positions, and that’s it.

So what are Bethesda’s plans? Your guess is as good as ours, folks!

It seems like Bethesda’s success has allowed them to operate as an almost altogether separate entity from Zenimax lately, and unless Zenimax Online is shutdown and any news turns up of their assets being pushed into Bethesda’s, maybe even Battlecry’s hands, we’re all equally in the dark.
