Can you believe it’s been four months since Nvidia unveiled their Shield handheld? My, my how time flies! Well, now it’s nearly summer and it’s time for the company to start shipping the thing, which the company has said will begin next month. At $349.99, it’s going to be a hard sell, though.
In case you forgot, which is completely understandable considering how quiet Nvidia’s been about their handheld compared to Sony with their Vita or Nintendo with their own handhelds, the Shield is an Android-powered device. As an Android user, I can specifically vouch for the fact that there just aren’t enough games on the platform, which has lead me to do some pretty out-of-character things to get the mobile experiences I desire. Maybe this’ll encourage developers? The second trick up the Shield’s sleeve is that it can wirelessly stream full PC games from an Nvidia-powered computer over wi-fi, which actually makes the handheld a clever video card accessory.
Still, at $100 more than the flagging Vita, I have a hard time believing this is going to catch on. If you must part with your money, pre-orders begin on May 20.
