  I’ve been Using Google Music Beta for about a week now and I’m rather impressed.  All of my music is DRM-free, usually purchased from Amazon, so I don’t have any of the same limitations that you do.  It took about 4 days to do 5000 songs or so, so not terrible, and once uploaded, it streams wonderfully.  That being said, Google Music Beta is not so much a backup for your music, but a streaming location.  As far as I know, you can’t re-download music from Google Music.  Amazon, however does allow you to.
