The Roommate: Chick Horror

In just a few days, Screen Gems will release The Roommate, or as I like to call it: “Single White Female Goes to College.” Minka Kelly from Friday Night Lights is assigned a dorm room with Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester, who then takes over her life. The preview warns, “Meet your new roommate. She wants to befriend you, she wants to protect you, and on February 4th, she wants to become you!

She wants to “become” you? Could there be a more chick-oriented concept for a thriller?

Lemme guess. Leighton starts borrowing Minka’s clothes and jewelry. Oh, it’s harmless at first, but then she takes her hairstyle too. And then she gets the same tattoo. And then – OMG – she steals her boyfriend! The horror!

This concept is only scary to chicks. I think it has to do with the fear of not being the prettiest one at the party. Ultimately, The Roommate is a movie about the terror a girl feels when someone else turns up wearing the same dress.

Check out Pink and Shakira at the VMA’s. They showed up in the same dress. It’s the ultimate horror. Look at the fear in their eyes. They want to kill each other.

Does Shakira want to “become” Pink, or is it Pink who wants to “become” Shakira? Who is stalking who here? (Actually, I would totally watch a show about Pink and Shakira as roommates – bookmark that idea for later…)

Anyway, I can’t imagine a guy freaking out because his roommate starts wearing the same clothes as him. Isn’t that what guys do?

“Dude, are you … wearing my T-shirt?”

“Is this yours?” Sniffs shirt, “I found it over there beneath the pizza boxes.”

“I’m a little weirded out that you’re wearing my stuff. And why do you smell like me?”

“I dunno. I smoked a lot of weed last night. Do you smell like weed?”

“Essence of weed is my scent. Wait — is that my hairstyle too?!”

“I just got out of bed, man. How is my hair supposed to look?”

“Short and messy is how I wear my hair, bro. Be honest… are you trying to become me?!?

No, guys don’t care. If somebody wants to wear their clothes, get the same tattoos and style their hair the same way, most guys are fine with it. They certainly aren’t going to get all scared and make a horror movie about it.

In fact, guys seem to love looking alike. Here are some examples:

Okay, I take it back.

That IS scary.
