Gee, it’s about time. For a movie that’s only four months out, it seems like Fox is cutting it a little close promoting this film. It’s also a good thing, because this comes not long after some disastrous looking cast photos leaked out a few weeks ago.
The original X-Men film was a great watch and while it didn’t really hold well on repeated viewings (I think it’s better than the sequels), it has a place in everyone’s hearts because it was the first really successful comic book film. Before Spiderman or Hellboy or Hulk, X-Men was ripping it up at the box office, paving the way for them and an army of other comic book-influenced films. I grew up on the animated series in the early 90s and when X-Men released in 2000, it seemed like it was coming a bit too late to cash in on that appeal, but what do I know: subsequent films set all kinds of theatrical records along the way. The series fell off a bit with the latter films, so it’s understandable that they want to go for a reboot of sorts.
Taking place in the 60s, X-Men: First Class covers the origin story of Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr before they became Professor X and Magneto. I’m not a fan of McAvoy’s whistl-y silent Xavier after Patrick Stewart owned the role in the previous films, but I’ll give it a toss. First Class is out on June 3rd, 2011.
