The following review was written by guest contributor Sam.
English voice actor Dean Elliott plays a mercenary ninja-for-hire named Jubei Kibagami in Ninja Scroll. As his voice acting goes, it’s stupendous, but the story isn’t without its flaws.
Jubei finds himself in the middle of a power struggle between two factions trying to control Japan. He finds himself fighting the opposition faction to the government against his will after being poisoned by the dart of an elder ninja (who will only give him the antidote with his aid). Jubei later realizes his antidote lies within a ninja women whose blood runs with poison, killing whoever she sleeps with. It’s only later that he finds out his arch enemy is one of the opposition leaders.
Ninja Scroll has tons of sex and violence but never really makes any sense (counter acting a poison with a poison is the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard). All of the villains in this movie have some sort of superhuman powers that are never explained. Jubei cuts off the head of one of his enemies and it magically regenerates back on his neck because… well, it’s never really clear why.
This movie has a big fanbase and I’ll probably receive a lot of hate for giving this a bad review. Sex and violence are fine, but those qualities alone can’t support an entire movie.
