Movie Review: Stan Helsing

The following review was written by guest contributor Sam.

From the people who brought us Scary Movie comes this horrific spoof. It’s Halloween night and Stan (Steve Howey) is nearing the end of his shift at the local video store, when his boss tells him he needs to deliver videos to the owners house before going to a Halloween party or he’s fired. Stan and his friends miss the turn to get to his destination throwing them in the midst of a ghost town as they are now hunted by famous horror movie icons.

Spoofing the Horror Movie genre can at times be rewarding, unfortunately for Stan Helsing this is not one of those movies. Throughout the film they keep trying to beat you with the concept that Stan is in someway related to Van Helsing, the infamous monster hunter, which leaves the audience to guess why the monsters hadn’t shown up before until this particular Halloween.

As far as I’m concerned Mia (Desi Lydic) had the only part in the movie that had convincing acting as her character stumbled over her own feet in the role of the dumb blonde. Leslie Nielsen (God rest his soul) played a cross dressing waitress in what was probably the worst roll of his career, and Kenan Thompson played a very unfunny character dressed up in a superhero costume the entire movie.

Stan Helsing could have been a funnier movie, it could have been a scarier movie, but it was just plain boring. One of the funniest parts of the movie is a part where they spoof Pinhead from Hellraiser, depicting him as having throwing darts stuck in his head for God’s sake, but the best part was when I paused it on Netflix and had a smoke in the garage.
