So here’s the deal. I’m not really much of a comic book person but after interviewing the guys from Phi 3 and talking about their comic series “spiralmind”, I was intrigued. Matt and Benito hooked me up with signed copies of the first 2 comics in the series (COLLECTOR’S ITEMS, BITCHES!! EAT IT!) and then I ruined them by cracking them open to give them a read through so I could review them.
Spiralmind follows the life of Ben Landry, electrical engineer and former Delta operative whose alter ego is the supernatural crime fighting “Spiralmind”.
The premise is an interesting one. It deals with religion and religious dichotomies, also including a Catholic priest and a Jewish rabbi as central characters.
In the first 2 issues, we see that the Rabbi is an exorcist and wields some powerful words of Jewish ass-kickery as he proceeds to lay the holy smack down on a demon who has possessed his old friend Douglas.
But that’s enough for the spoilers.
I think the artwork is a little rough but it’s pretty stylized so I’m not sure if that’s intentional; It may be. The story seems to be pretty solid and, while they’re still scratching the surface of the development stage in the comic, the characters are fleshing out a bit. (Matt gave me a lot of back story that will be filled in with future issues and got me up to speed on what’s going on with the story in general so I know the characters will develop nicely). The premise is unlike anything I’ve ever heard of and is very intriguing.
Here’s the final word on this. Like I said, I’m not a reader of comics…I think the last comic I read was an issue of Archie and Jughead, back in the 70’s but it seems to me comics have come a long way since then. I enjoyed both issues of Spiralmind and, if I’m honest, I’m kinda looking forward to getting a copy of the 3rd issue. I am interested to see where the guys at Phi 3 take this.
If you get a chance, I’d definitely recommend checking out Spiralmind, from Phi 3 Comics.
