Growing Up TV: Samurai Pizza Cats

Samurai Pizza Cats (Cat Ninja Legend Teyandee in Japan) was the first enjoyable anime show I watched as a kid. English versions of the show took pot shots at the Ninja Turtles, modern day events, and even pop stars like Madonna.

Saban’s Pizza Cats not only introduced me to anime, but also taught me to understand certain aspects about comedy. I remember watching sitcoms with my parents only laughing when they did, not truly understanding the jokes, and Samurai Pizza Cats helped break that cycle. Our heroes Polly Esther, Speedy Cerviche, and Guido Anchovy are out to protect little Tokyo from the evil rat Big Cheese. Mild mannered fast food employees by day and fierce fighting samurai by night, they fight villain robots made by the Big Cheese along with Bad Bird leading the fierce Ninja Crows. If the latter sounds ridiculous, that’s because it is, this show is insane, and today holds its own in the realm of witty slapstick comedy. For years this show has remained an underground hit without a formal DVD release, but it’s finally available on Amazon, so go buy it now!
