I briefly heard about this show but wasn’t to interested in it to find out more until we talked about it on our latest podcast. None of us watched it so I figured I would give it a go. After forcing myself to start watching it after reading the comments on Hulu about how terrible it was I was prepared to hate it. The comments were wrong.
The River is actually very entertaining and quite creepy. After a beloved scientist/explorer goes missing and thought of as dead, his emergency beacon goes off and his wife convinced his son, both of whom accompanied the father on his journey’s for the last 20 years, to go look for him.
Producers for a TV show are willing to pay for everything if they have the ability to film everything. The gather a crew, an engine mechanic that worked for the scientist until he was fired for no reason and his daughter who is sensitive to supernatural-ness. Then you have a mercenary for protection who has an alternative motive, the producer and his crew and the daughter of a missing cameraman that is accompanying the scientist.
Crazy demon souls, haunted forests and natives that judge you are things the crew has encountered in just the first three episodes. One of the things I really like about the show is that they close the mystery by the end of the show instead of dragging on throughout the episodes that would wind up boring and uneventful. I don’t know how many different monsters, ghouls the shows writers can come up with but for now I’m really into it. There were a couple of times where I would talk out loud saying stuff like “oh heeeellllll no” or “fuck that” and if you can get me to do that, you are doing a pretty good job!
The show is probably not for everyone, it’s a found-footage, paranormal, action-adventure show and has those stereotypes of the cast. Once you get beyond that and the extremely shaky camera work, you may actually like the show. If you’ve watched it let me know what you think of the show!
