Childish Gambino “Royalty” Review

We’re big fans of Childish Gambino here at FleshEatingZipper and absolutely loved Camp, giving it a 10/10. It’s been eight months since we’ve gotten anything besides single from Gambino and I’ve been needing my fix. The other day Gambino dropped his latest mixtape, Royalty. Well what do we think of it?

Royalty is not like Camp for the most part, I mean, it’s a mixtape so I don’t really expect it to be. What I expect for a mixtape is experimenting. That is what this mixtape seems to be about. It’s weird now that Gambino has proved that he is a damn good artist to hear more popular artists like Ghostface Killah and Bun B. One of the other thing I noticed was not all tracks were produced by Gambino which is cool to see other lesser known producers on the mixtape. In fact some of my favorite tracks, Black Faces & Toxic were produced by Boi-1da & skywlkr respectively.

I like Gambino’s lyrics, being a younger nerdy dude I’m able to relate to what raps/sings about. Most of these tracks are better because of Gambino’s lyrics “drop a new track, all blogs go to heaven; kill the web, man these niggas need they hits up.” That was funny to me because it’s true, Gambino being the new hotness everybody wants to hear his new stuff even if it’s not the CDQ.

The only downside I see to this album is that it’s more rap than hip-hop and I think people that are not into rap but loved Camp may not like this because of that. Again I have to say that it’s Gambino’s lyrics that really make the tracks and I hope for another story album like Camp soon. I’m not saying not to listen to this mixtape because I’m still listening to it after 8 playthroughs and will be for a while and it’s definitely worth listening to it for Gambino’s lyric game!
