The Mindy Project Review: Does it Live Up to the Hype?

When the rumors were spreading about the impending doom of The Office, there was hope after I heard that Mindy Kaling spun off a series picked up by Fox called The Mindy Project. I was very excited for this show until a few months ago when I got more details of what it’s going to be about. Single doctor trying to find true love in the world. Sound familiar? It’s like every show I try to stay away from but I like Mindy Kaling so I wanted to give her a chance.

Mindy Lahiri, a successful OB/GYN, has major guy issues that are controlling her life. She is looking for true romance, like you would see from a movie but is hooking up with the “bad boy” (Ed Weeks) who you see she really has no interest in except for sex. There is another doctor (Chris Messina, Reese from The Newsroom) who has an obvious attraction for her but she doesn’t seem to see it and continues to fall back to the bad guy.

I’m obviously not the target audience with this show. I’ve heard from many critics that this was going to be on of those shows that the guys would like also. Not the case. The New Girl or Ben & Kate are shows that are also geared towards the male audience. To me, The Mindy Project is a show that has been created countless times with just a different setting and it bores me. Honestly the best part of the pilot for me was the awkward date with Ed Helms which was very short lived.

I will check out the next couple of episodes but I can’t see my mind changing, so unfortunately for me my Tuesday nights will end early.
