Sometimes, it seems as if we create laws just so we can make TV shows about people violently breaking those laws, all for our entertainment. Such is the case with Boardwalk Empire, the Prohibition-era crime drama starring the adorably snaggle-toothed Steve Buscemi.
If you’re one of those people who loves to get down and dirty with dramatized period crime shows, then rejoice. HBO has just renewed Boardwalk Empire for a fourth season.
Boardwalk Empire is a critical darling and has been a familiar name during the Emmy and Golden Globe awards for the past two years. Says Michael Lombardo, President of HBO Programming, “Terry Winter, Martin Scorsese and the rest of their outstanding team continue to produce a stunning show that never fails to surprise and entertain.”
Of course, it can’t hurt that you’ve got The Sopranos writer Terence Winter and mobster lovin’ director Martin Scorsese on the team to begin with. These guys know their mobsters. Plus you’ve got Mark Wahlberg as a fellow Executive Producer. A dude who looks tough even in his underwear surely brings a certain indefinable quality to the production.
The third season only just debuted on September 16th to 7.2 million viewers, about a million and a half shy of season two’s average 8.6 million viewers. HBO execs are confident the show’s numbers will only increase through DVR playback, HBO On Demand and HBO Go.
And if that doesn’t increase the show’s viewership… Well, they know where you live… And they have ways of making you watch.
