Netflix Secures New Partnership with Disney, Beating Out Cable Channels

I had to do it.

You know how after several months of a movie opening in theaters, you can catch it on premium TV channel’s like HBO or Showtime? Well Netflix just secured a deal with Disney to be the first ones to show these movies ahead of those other channels starting in 2016.

For us, this is a really big deal – for the first time in our largest market – new Disney movies will be available when and where you want to watch them on Netflix rather than on a premium cable channel. Our popular “Just for Kids” section, which is especially programmed for children under twelve, will now have such beloved Disney theatrical classics as “Dumbo,” “The Aristocats,” and “Pocahontas” and new favorites like “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” and the “Air Bud/Buddies” franchise on top of the incredible range of Disney Channel, ABC Family and Disney XD shows already available to stream on Netflix.

For the older set, later today we’ll have Tim Burton’s incredible holiday favorite “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and in the months and years to come, the epic “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl,” an array of M. Night Shayamalan movies, including the supernatural thriller “The Sixth Sense” and other really great Disney movies including “National Treasure,” “Phenomenon” and “Quiz Show.”

I know 2016 sounds like a along time away, but starting today you can start watching older Disney classic’s like Dumbo, Pocahontas and Alice in Wonderland. Another up side to this is that Netflix is taking a jab at big cable companies by offering a service that is cheaper and higher quality. We’ve talked about it before, but I would love to see cable companies coming way down in price and for premium channels to team up with Netflix or offer an online subscription where I don’t need to have cable.
