Jimmy Fallon Rumored to Take Over ‘Tonight Show’ In New York, Replace Leno

I guess Jimmy Fallon is outgrowing Johnny Carson’s old studio because NBC is currently building him a new one in Rockefeller Plaza. Rumors are spreading that this new studio isn’t for moving Late Night to, but for when Fallon takes over The Tonight Show.

I’m sure this all sounds familiar. Back in 2009, Conan O’Brien moved his entire staff from New York City to Los Angeles to take over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno while Leno was given a new show that served as O’Brien’s lead-in. (N and I actually went to the recording of Conan’s third Show back in 2009!) After ratings fell for both Leno’s new show and O’Brien’s Tonight Show, NBC wanted to push both shows back thirty minutes, something that O’Brien wasn’t willing to do. Leno took back The Tonight Show and O’Brien went on tour because of a non-compete with NBC. When that ended, he landed on TBS with his current show, Conan.

Since Leno returned, he’s retained spots the top spots in both viewership and ratings, so it seems a little weird that he would want to leave or for NBC to want to kick him to the curb. If this rumor turns out to be true, I wonder how Fallon feels. I know I’d be super nervous about taking that show over after what happened with O’Brien.
