I may be able to forgive Kevin Smith for his recent films. Cop Out was terrible, Red State was even worse. What happens when Kevin Smith steps out of his comfort zone and starts making action films or whatever he was trying to do with those films? Only bad things. What happens when he starts writing the third film in the Clerks series? Only good things, we hope!
As he wrote on his Facebook page:
THE BEGINNING OF THE END
20 years ago today, we started shooting CLERKS.
20 years later, with no plan or provocation, I jumped out of bed at 4:20 this morning and started writing CLERKS III.
It’s been like hanging out with old friends.
And after 2 hours of tapping the keys and giggling, I have come to a conclusion…
CLERKS III will be the best film I’ll ever make.
Clerks was a pretty important movie for me. At a time when I was trying to shoot a little indie flick, the film came out of nowhere to remind me it could be done. The tenth anniversary set, complete with The Snowball Effect, a documentary on how they scraped together the funds to make it happen, is probably the best DVD in my collection. Clerks II added quite a bit to the production, probably too much considering the original film’s $27,000 budget, and coming over ten years after the original, added a lot to story of slackers Dante and Randal who were now gradually moving on in their lives. At the time, Smith said he wouldn’t start writing a Clerks III until he and the two stars were in their forties, but I guess we don’t have to wait quite that long.
