M83’s Theme For ‘Oblivion’ Released, Is Magical

What a terrible bridge design!

What a terrible bridge design!

I’d mentioned a number of reasons I was interested in Joseph Kosinski’s post-apocalyptic action film Oblivion, but the biggest may be the fact that M83’s Anthony Gonzalez was commissioned to put the score together. Now we have the first (well, second, I’ll give you more in a sec) offspring of this marriage of passions and it is wonderful.

For Oblivion, Gonzalez worked with Joseph Trapanese, responsible for the classical accompaniment for Daft Punk’s score to Tron Legacy. This makes a lot of sense, although my gut feeling is that Kosinski wanted some traditional sweeping movements in his film as M83’s eighties-style synth work can be a little eccentric in relation to traditional film scores. Below is not only the new upbeat theme featuring Norwegian singer Susanne Sundfør, who brings some Röyksopp-ian vibes to the affair, but also ‘StarWaves’, a more somber instrumental track released from the film a few weeks ago. I’m excited through and through for this new album, which drops April 19th in all formats worldwide.
