Last we left our Strip Search buddies, they hadn’t really accomplished anything. Imported from all over the country for the chance to win big prizes and work with the Penny Arcade crew for a year, Strip Search is a fascinating show. Today, however, it was nice to see some actual blood being drawn. Not literal blood, just figurative blood.
Today’s challenge involved designing a t-shirt. Since comics and ad revenue alone can’t keep a site afloat, and Penny Arcade should know, these artists were tested with producing a t-shirt design for the show while the Penny Arcade Design team looked on. It actually blew my mind how many of the contestants admitted outright that graphic design wasn’t their forte when so much about comic layout and lettering is just that. Half the artists stuck really close to the show’s logo and style guide and while not disqualified, certainly rounded out the bottom of the selections. Amy’s design, that of fists raising up to grab the Strip Search magnifying glass, I’d agree was probably the best of the twelve. Levin Sadsad from the design team seemed to have an issue with the arms wrapping around from the back, but I think that was probably the coolest aspect of the design.
In the end, Amy picked Katie and Alex to go to elimination, which would normally be the second half of a regular episode of TV, but is instead delegated to next Tuesday. These half-episodes are killing me. The duo will need to sweat under the gaze of the Penny Arcade guys to produce something on large drawing tables, but we won’t be able to see that, again, until next week.
