It’s ironic that despite loving Power Rangers as a kid, a $100 million-plus movie about giant robots and huge terrible thunder lizards somehow repelled me. Yeah, weird. Poster Videodrome’s been keeping us up to date in the forums, but I haven’t had much to say about it. I mean, okay, it’s a nerd fantasy. With the recent release of the new Wonder Con footage, I have to ask director Guillermo del Toro, “why is this your first movie in seven years?”
A massive American robot is called Gipsy Ranger is weird, but seeing the nations of the Pacific Rim construct a coalition of massive mecha to extinguish Godzillas is right in del Toro’s wheel well, especially when all the neon lighting flies and we see Ron Perlman in a wacky hairdo. The scenario is weird in only a way he can provide. People are calling this “movie of the year”, but what seems like the most obvious nerd bait ever, including the bizarre inclusion of GLaDOS, hasn’t quite sunk its hooks into me, yet.
Okay, I figured it out. I’ll see this because Charlie Day is in it. I’ll take that. That’s a good reason.
