Magic: The Gathering in the house!

This week’s challenge produced some excellent artwork. As Penny Arcade have shown over the years, their work has often weaved with freelance projects for game publishers with their Penny Arcade Presents work. Here, our artists must produce a skate deck design for Magic: The Gathering summer’s promotional character, the firey minx Chandra.

The problem I have with this episode is that almost all of them were winners. Picking out losers here seems like splitting hairs, but I’ll get to that in a second. Erika’s winning design was great and really fit the parameters of the board. I had some issues with a few of the shapes, particularly those defining her shoulders, but she deserved a win here. My money was actually on Katie’s design because I adore everything she draws, but they were correct in pulling it out because of its pin-up pose. Maki’s was great, Mac’s could’ve been great had he used color and maybe had a few creatures huddled around the bottom? Dunno. Even Abby’s design was pretty slick. As they kept repeating it in the show: great work all around.

The decision to cleave Erika’s choice of who would face elimination seemed cruel at first, but then I remembered that the Elimination episodes were usually the flattest in regards to tempo because it’s mainly Mike and Jerry taking potshots at the potential eliminates as as they work. That’s cute for a while, but not for a twenty-minute episode.
