What does one do when they come for you?
I didn’t know you could cancel COPS. I thought it was an inexorable institution, a bobbing marker to verify that TV still existed. FOX created the show, arguably the first in the reality TV genre, twenty-five years ago and they’ve produced over nine-hundred episodes of it. Well, FOX is done with that.
COPS‘ new home on Spike makes a lot of sense since G4 probably couldn’t have afforded the production bill while they were still around. It set the bar for lowest-common denominator entertainment pretty high by following police departments around the country and displaying the day-to-day, moment-to-moment beats of their routine. Is it weird that they commodified and formulated all those thousands of hours of footage into a three segment show? Yeah, but who wouldn’t buckle down for a few hours of COPS?
We wish these guys all the best. After all, this show will survive the Apocalypse.
