Double Fine’s Next Production Is… a Sesame Street Game? I Have To Be Reading This Wrong…

Today, Warner Bros. Interactive and Tim Schafer’s Double Fine game studio announced Sesame Street: Once Upon A Monster, which is “a truly original interactive experience” for the Xbox 360/Kinect. Uh… huh…

Ya know, at some point I had some really high hopes for Double Fine – the production company founded by LucasArts vet Tim Schafer – but, I mean… c’mon now, a Sesame Street game? Let’s be fair and look at the track record, though: the company’s first game, the expensive, long-in-development Psychonauts, was a flawed platformer that failed to capture the audience’s dollars. Their second game was the expensive, long-in-development Brütal Legend, which was a flawed platformer/real-time strategy that failed to capture… oh, okay, now I get it.

In all seriousness though, maybe Double Fine will finally start to see some success with this game. This is their first retail game announcement since they revealed that they were working on a series of Xbox Live Arcade games (Costume Quest and Stacking being released so far). It’s sort of sad to see that the guy who brought us Full Throttle and Grim Fandango fifteen years ago is working on a title like this, and this is coming from a guy who grew up on Sesame Street. But while he seems optimistic about the whole thing (considering he’s a parent now himself), there’s no denying that he’d probably rather be working on more original work – and see it get into people’s hands.
