We’ve pretty much assumed it for a while now, but at a recent GDC panel, Bungie’s Lead Network Engineer David Aldridge officially unveiled that they’re working on a “massively multiplayer action game” and that it isn’t “WoW in space.” Personally, I’m kinda excited.
We at FEZ have talked about Halo fatigue before and so we’re glad that this isn’t another one of those games, but it’s great to see them working on something entirely different. Well, mostly different, bare in mind that I felt Bungie was creatively stifling itself when it went for Halo 2 in the early 00s instead of their Project Medieval. I fell out of love with the series by Halo 3 and just never picked up on the excitement again. Adding a persistent MMO element to it, kind of like PlanetSide, could be an amzing game primarily because it hasn’t been done all that great so far.
The new franchise is still as-yet-named and is part of Bungie’s new ten year publishing deal with Activision. We’ll let you know what we think as the news rolls out.
UPDATE: Apparently the whole thing was a hoax meant to riff off the latest rumors. Of course, they don’t deny it, but my money’s still on a Bungie MMOFPS. Just sayin’.
