Electronic Arts and Popcap, Gaming super-mega-giant and ultra-popular-game developer have become one with today’s announcement that EA has acquired the apple of their eye.
EA has made no secret about being very interested in Popcap and have been working for some time to come to an agreement which would allow them to acquire the developer of such smash hits as Bejeweled and Plants Vs. Zombies. Today, that dream became a reality with EA’s offer of approximately $750 million in cash and stocks, which breaks down as $650 million in cash and $100 million in stocks and earnings.
Popcap reported $100 million in earnings and 30% compounded annual growth for the 2010 fiscal year, with the majority of their market falling into the smartphone and casual user market. This, of course, made them very attractive to EA since this is where they’ve wanted to be for a very long time.
Popcap is apparently very excited about the acquisition, which will not hamper their creativity or attempt to change their direction, according to execs at EA. In fact, Popcap is SO happy about this turn of events that they even wrote a little note for EA, which you can see below.
OH, those clever kids!
So what does this mean for the gaming market? Well, that remains to be seen. What we can speculate, though, is that with the power of EA behind them, Popcap games will have a lot more resources and money available to them which should turn out to be a good thing for all of us.
