Zynga, the mega company with games like Words with Friends and FarmVille, have made it official: they have bought OMGPOP, the makers behind the insanely popular Draw Something. It appears that Zynga is making a bid to be the only player in social gaming in the mobile space with their “….with Friends” family of games dominating the time of mobile users.
Zynga purchased OMGPOP for a staggering $200 Million dollars. I have a feeling if OMGPOP wasn’t looking to sell, Zynga would’ve had no problem forging ahead with a “Draw with Friends” clone, much like they done in the past with such games as Mafia Wars and Dream Heights. While going out and buying a company is the preferred method of business than ripping off someone’s IP, it also continues to show Zynga’s lack of creativity. They have been under fire for a while by many other mobile game companies and this will only fuel the debate further.
As a hater of social games and IP stealing, companies like Zynga and Gameloft need to really rethink their long term strategy as having such a heavy reliance on Facebook and using other companies successful properties as jumping off points (Modern Combat anyone?) will only last so long.
But that’s just my opinion.
