The recent Whiskey split has been the cap on what’s been an exciting batch of changes, mergers, and acquisitions within the gaming journalism space. But few people realize how deeply rooted some of these outlets are and how many others seem to have appeared from nowhere. The industry is moving and shifting so fast because the industry it’s based on is still relatively new as well. The oldest publication we have listed here is only a few years older than I am.
It actually came across as pretty astonishing that while much of the talent in the industry is borne of sites by current gaming print mogul Future or past print mogul Ziff Davis, those sites have consolidated down or have been washed away by the sands of time. 1UP in particular suffered massive exoduses of talent at the hands of bad mergers by terrible parents, leading it from what was once an epic gaming site to nearly vestigial. While many journalists have stayed in the biz, many have also moved onto roles at developers and publishers as well. So here, at a glance, is the shape of gaming journalism over the past twenty-plus years.
