On May 20, 2003, Sony Online Entertainment launched Planetside, the biggest and most interactive FPS in history and the first of a new genre of MMO – the MMOFPS or Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter.
Planetside was hugely successful and set a very high standard for first person shooters to come. Now, 9 years later, and with the announcement of Planetside 2, Sony Online Entertainment has released a series of screenshots, comparing the old with the new.
What you’re about to see is a group of images showing the difference between the technology and design skill of 9 years ago and the technology and design skill of today. This is the kind of thing that showcases the ability and dedication of developers and designers and their desire to bring us better games than we’ve had in the past.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that the level of game design today is that much better than it’s ever been before but we all know that new equipment and new technology affords designers the ability to create games which are faster, prettier and more immersive than they’ve ever been. From there, it’s up to the developers and publishers to drive the new titles forward and ensure they continue to get better and better.
All we can do is hope they keep their eye on the prize and give us games that will keep us coming back for more.
Well, at least the new games LOOK really pretty. See for yourself!

- The New Sunderer, Personnel Carrier

- Now that’s what I call a quad!

- With this, I’ll strafe you in the face!

- New lighting and shadows on the tank

- The Galaxy transport

- The Vanu Sovereignty “Max”

- A light armored soldier from the Vanu Sovereignty

- The Terran Republic version of the Max

- The Terran Republic stealth class

- The Max from the New Conglomerate

- And, finally, the New Conglomerate’s light soldier
This new batch of screenshots has me pretty excited for the new Planetside, which is currently in beta. I was a big fan of the first iteration and I’m looking forward to getting a chance to play the second. Rest assured that when that happens, we’ll be telling all of you just how good it plays…we all know how good it looks.
