When Trion Worlds told me about their upcoming title “Defiance”, I was immediately intrigued. Not only were they sporting a “Best OF” caliber RTS but now they were telling me they have an MMO-Shooter which is going to tie in to a television series on SyFy?
Well, I just had to find out what this was all about, so I headed over to Defiance and had me a little peek!
The first thing I want to talk about is the game itself. Playing on the Xbox 360, I took note of the quality of the title. The gameplay is smooth and crisp. The controls are tight and responsive. The graphics are sharp and there’s no lack of attention to detail.
I started out the game with a weapon which looks a lot like a cylinder-loaded grenade launcher and shoots some kind of whacky, glowing, yellow things at people. When they hit something they stick and are then detonated by hitting the X button. This can be pretty fun when you’ve stacked 5 or 6 of them on an enemy and then detonate them, sending the enemy flying across the screen in the ensuing blast. I couldn’t help but smile to myself.
The guy who was demoing the game for me had me jump on a quad and I was off to the races – zipping around, jumping hills, turbo-ing to extreme speeds and generally getting my cruise on. He had me go over to an area where a mission could be played out (Survive as long as possible while bunches of nasties come at you) and I happily obliged by blowing up about 108 of them before I was overrun.
That was quite a bit of hair-raising fun so I figured I’d tool around some more and have some adventures, which I did. I spent quite a bit of time with the game, killing and getting killed, running around like an idiot and generally having more fun than a kid in a toy store.
While this was going on I was talking to them about the tie in to the television show. They weren’t able to tell me TOO much but this is what I gathered;
There will be a show on SyFy which will exist in the same world. The story is that a bunch of aliens came to Earth and tried to make peaceful-like but then some moron blew up one of their big ships and caused a rather unhealthy shit-storm here on our favorite rock, killing off most of the human populace, which was immediately followed by a war.
By the time we get to the series / game we live together in a tenuous peace and trade in alien artifacts, and the like.
I tried to dig up more information but they told me they couldn’t reveal any more and I decided I’d better let it go before they started poking me with sharp, pointy things.
What we can surmise is that the events which unfold in the television show and the game will effect each other and they will intertwine in some kind of fancy dance of mixed technology and the kind of goodness that can only be brought about by large guns and explosives.
By the time I was finished playing the game, I was thoroughly happy with and had already decided that I would be buying it when it was released so. I guess I’ll see you guys on good old Terra-Firma sometime in the early part of 2013, as long as all goes to plan.
