The world is on fire right now with rumors that Microsoft is developing a seven inch tablet at their Silicon Valley offices. Not running either Windows 8 or Windows Phone 8, its OS, like the Xbox 360’s, will be built on the same kernel and probably feature a Metro-style OS in some form. So, even though they run the same tech and ports will be super easy, odds are you won’t be able to move any of that tech over. And there are other issues. There are oh, so many other issues with an Xbox Surface. So the question pops up: why would anyone want this?
Here’s the thing: an Xbox surface will be na ARM-based tablet, which is what Windows RT is designed for. Of course, that means you’ll have access to their less-than-plentiful apps. It won’t be compatible with any currently existing Xbox games, either boxed or through Xbox Live Arcade, so a whole new class of games will have to be created.
Then there’s the fact that no one bought the platform Microsoft intended to be the portable Xbox – or Xboy, for those with old-fashioned ideas with what a gaming portable should be – which is Windows Phone. That’s right, Microsoft has already failed at promoting portable gaming and we’ve failed in purchasing it. So now the world wants yet another standalone platform from Microsoft to buy games on? Touchscreen games on, at that?
What is wrong with the world? I want to hear why this is so attractive in the comments below. Please tell me why.
