Nothing sets the tone of a SimCity game faster than the music. Whether it’s the clever sounds of a farty MIDI track from SimCity 2000 or the string sections of this newest game, hearing the lightweight plucking and sheer optimism of their score is an uplifting experience. Available now in most places you can legally acquire music (and probably many places you can’t), you can relive the urban planning experience wherever you are.
While it’s not something I’d introduce into my regular rotation, soundtracks usually can’t, composer Chris Tilton has pulled off some excellent work. He’s no stranger to the big time, having collaborated with J.J. Abrams over the years for his various TV shows and scoring several movie tie-in games like Jumper or Night at the Museum. This new SimCity soundtrack is lengthy enough without the alternate Night versions and its almost Elfman-esque charm is a perfect addition to, perhaps, your Instrumental playlist, or, if you think really hard about it, maybe a political thriller. I don’t know, I’m just tossing out ideas, go check it out.
