Lunge 2…3…4…

I wrote an article yesterday in which I discussed the customization issues which have plagued MMO games since their early days and have only gotten worse over the years. Another prevalent issue in MMOs – and indeed, in games in general – has been character animation. I have always found that the characters were either animated in a very unnatural fashion or had oddly disproportionate parts, like a male character who has big biceps, bowling ball shoulders and forearms like toothpicks or no big forearms, no neck and tiny little biceps.

This is annoying because it removes the suspension of disbelief and kills some of the immersion of the game. Well, people have been working on trying to make more realistic animations, sound effects and models for a very long time and now I think the guys over at RSI have cracked the magic code and solved the riddle of the ages.

The demo animation they released is, in a word, ridiculous. In two words, fucking ridiculous. This is the most realistic and comprehensive character animation I have ever seen and I am more than impressed. Take a look at the video below and you should be at least as impressed as I am. Now, the matter is simply one of waiting for the alpha to come out so I can get my hands on this gem. (Or maybe at E3, if we’re lucky.)
