In an announcement that rivals their complete abstinence from Sega’s Dreamcast lineup entirely, Electronic Arts made clear that they weren’t bringing their NFL-exclusive Madden game to the Wii U this year. Holy crap. Wow. I don’t play “football” games, but barring the game’s special 25th Anniversary markings this year, having a console without a Madden is a tell-tale sign of its long-term vitality.
Of course, this isn’t going to rule out future Madden games and definitely not all EA titles going forward, but it’s a very sad position for Nintendo to be in. Their console sold poorly this past quarter and with heavyweight competition on the horizon, I doubt it’ll take a year before they’re surpassed in total hardware shipments at the rate they’re going. Who really cares about Madden, anyway? It’s not players like me, or maybe even you, but the more casual gamer that all consoles ultimately need to appease to truly become successful. Well, the Wii U just ain’t that.
