A Queen Of Industry

On the Friday before our Monday launch, Strip Search‘s second-place contestant, the quirky Abigail Howard launched her own Kickstarter mere days after the show’s finale. Her unique spin on the macabre with her comic The Last Halloween hadn’t won over Penny Arcade’s Mike and Jerry, but her large and disappointed fanbase – one that simply didn’t exist before the show began to hit the web in March – would help her out. Within 20 minutes of her launch, she’d secured her $9,000 ask and by the end of the day, just barely missed the $50,000 milestone. That she included stretch goals up to $250k – an instructed “no no” in my readings – it didn’t matter since her ask was low and the fanbase craved her work so much that as she stands today, she’s well beyond ten times her ask, a total that will grow and grow. Full disclosure: I’ve also contributed to the campaign.

While diluted by the time since the show’s conclusion and his smaller slice of the popularity pie compared to Abby, Naro’s total after two hours sits at over $6,000 of a $10,000 ask, which he will no doubt complete today and watch as the ticker continues to climb. Both campaigns follow a successful campaign in May by yet another Strip Search artist, Lexxy Douglass, whose Cloud Factory won $83,000 on a $7,500 ask. Lexxy’s campaign stirred rumors that she had been eliminated from the show – which was filmed back in December – and was now funding an external project, which would turn out to be true as she was eliminated in the show weeks later.
