The Road Ahead
Over the past week, I’ve peppered a number of sources to spread the word on MANEATER, many of whom are probably plenty tired of hearing about new Kickstarters. Without a built-in fanbase (believe it or not, I’m not a celebrity!), the campaign becomes a letter-writing affair in hopes that one will catch the eye of some bigshot and get a retweet or an interview which may generate some attention, which may catch onto another crowd and so on. Having spent the past two years building relationships with Public Relations people, I can’t say I envy their job at points. The coin is now flipped between my writing job here and my passion project with MANEATER.
Selling a new comic in the Kickstarter space isn’t exactly an easy task, either – then again, I don’t read comics and don’t really follow the medium. It only takes a small amount of research to see that people are a bit more passionate about different takes on games than they are on comics oh Kickstarter with many of the crowdfunder’s successful comic projects either work by known artists or print drives for existing comics. Comic book sites are also less likely to write up about new comic Kickstarters while sites covering games tend to slurp those campaigns up (yep, we’re guilty!). Either way, as I’ve already highlighted, you have to be known.
As far as MANEATER goes, by optimism is still up the roof and we’ve had some incredible backers already. We’ve still got three weeks and I look forward to sending those e-mails…
