Rumors abound that the next generation of consoles will be unveiled at this year’s expos and between CES, this month, and E3 later this year, if new consoles are coming, these shows should be when they’re revealed.
But do they exist?
First off, let me say this: I don’t believe there’s a snowball’s chance in hell the new Xbox will be called the 720 so how about let’s all just stop calling it that NOW and move on. Instead, let’s call it the Xbox 3 or the Xbox 2012 or even the Xbox pooperdeedleydoo because any of those sound LESS lame than 720, especially if you understand the concept behind the name 360.
So are the PS4 and the Xbox pooperdeedleydoo going to be announced this year? Not if you believe the companies who make them.
Sony has said that they are excited about the future of the PS3 many times, including recently, and have given no indication that they’re even thinking of another console release, except to admit that Microsoft getting the drop on them again would be bad for their future.
Microsoft, on the other hand, has said many times that a new console is years away and that they’ve yet to reach anywhere near the limits of their current hardware and software with the titles which have been created.
On the other hand, development houses including Ubisoft have quietly admitted that they have received or are imminently receiving new development boxes which are hand-builds with specific off-the-shelf parts, including AMD gpu’s, which would indicate another leap forward is coming.
So who are we to believe? Shall we go with the developers and buy into them having received new hardware to learn or do we believe the manufacturers and accept that they have no plans to make new hardware at this time?
Well, if I were a betting man, I would go with the developers and bet a solid nickel (out of the company account, of course) that the people there are telling us the truth and they do, in fact, have (or soon will have) hardware representative of the next line of consoles. So now we have to ask if this means we can expect announcements this year which, if we are to believe the rumors, could come as early as CES.
Again, if I were a betting man, I’d say CES is out but E3 is possible, if any announcements are to be made this year at all.
I guess we will all just have to wait and see and, of course, we will let you know as soon as we know more.
