Wikipedia Joins the SOPA/PIPA Fight, Shutting Down for 24 Hours on Jan 18th

Hot damn! Wikipedia will be joining reddit, us and every other site that is shutting down on this Wednesday, January 18th. Instead of 12 hours Jimmy Wales has said it will be 24 hours from midnight to midnight Washington DC time or EST.

I’ve talked with Nick about this before and I Nick brings up a valid point. Wikipedia should not act politically in anyway, they are supposed to be the unbiased source of knowledge even if they could be affected by this new law. That makes sense to me but I also think that they are an authoritative voice that can educate people that don’t know about this bill or are misinformed.

The shut down will only affect the English Wikipedia site which gets about 24 MILLION visitors globally every day! Now even though SOPA has been shelved after The White House made a statement saying “we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet” we cannot just throw out hand up in victory because we haven’t won until the bill is not passed.
