Installing Windows 8 Consumer Preview on a Virtual Machine

So Windows 8 Consumer Preview has been released and you want to try it out? You can download it and format your hard drive or dual-boot but those options are no fun, right? Well luckily I will show you how to set up a virtual machine and install Windows 8. If you’ve ever installed Windows you will be able to do this even if you don’t know what a virtual machine is.

So a virtual machine is essentially a hardware emulator running on top of your current operating system. That being said you should have some pretty decent specs because you will have to share resources like memory, hard drive space and processing power.

Lets get started by downloading VirtualBox and one of the ISO’s from Microsoft’s website. If you have a 64 bit processor you can download the 64 bit ISO but you will need to make sure your computer supports hardware virtualization and it’s enabled in the BIOS. Watch the video below on setting everything up.

Why aren’t we using Microsoft VirtualPC? Because it doesn’t support 64bit, you will get the error above and it doesn’t support Windows 8 right now! Go figure!

Once you get VirtualBox installed and start the Windows install you will need the CD Key: DNJXJ-7XBW8-2378T-X22TX-BKG7J. We will be previewing Windows 8 in the next couple of days so look out for that!
