iPhone rumors abound, with mounting evidence that the newest record-breaking Apple device comes equipped with a new dock connector. At the same time, Apple is said to be bundling the headphone jack along the bottom of the phone as well. Adapters or not, one has to wonder: are you willing to throw out all of those old accessories?
Believe it or not, Apple has used the same monstrous 30-pin connector for its iPods, iPhones, and iPads for nearly a decade. An entire industry has been built around accessorizing and augmenting the device. iPod docks over the years have come with various adapter plates for different-sized iPods, but other accessories are not so flexible. If it is in fact true that the iPhone 5 will use this new connector (they have to move on some time), it follows that it will probably fall to the last iPods and new iPads as well. The accessory makers are going to have no issues creating new peripherals for the iPhone 5, but what kind of response will we get from the throngs of Apple owners over the years. How successful will these adapters be when some are specific to each device?
