Because it’s just a smaller, weaker iPad

Today at Apples press conference they announced the 4th generation iPad and the new iPad mini. The 4th gen iPad has some improvements, A6X processor that doubles the graphics capability from the last generation iPad, a Lighting connector instead of the old 30-pin connector and support for Sprint’s LTE network. The big news, though was the announcement of the iPad mini.

The iPad mini has a 7.9″ screen at a resolution of 1024 x 768, so no retina display. It also has a slower processor, an dual core A5 chip and 5 megapixel iSight camera. This of course has the Lighting connector and comes in black or white. They even have mini smart covers for the thing. But what surprised me was the price. $329 for the 16GB wifi only model and if you want the cellular it will cost you $459. The iPad mini is only $170 cheaper than the 4th gen iPad. I’m not convinced yet that the iPad mini is worth the price. I’m not sure if the smaller, non-retina screen and older processor make up that difference.

You will be able to get the iPad mini in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB as with only wifi for $329, $429 and $529 respectively. The iPad mini with built in cellular will run you $459, $559 and $659 for the same size models. Pre-orders start on Friday the 26th and it will be available on November 2nd.
