YouTube Pulling Funding for 60% of Original Channels

Watch me please.

YouTube is trying to have stronger content to keep people watching and be able to demand high advertising dollars. One way they have been trying to do this was by funding about 100 channels on YouTube, giving out more than $100 million to help these channels produce better content. Channels received up to $5 million in funding!

The way the deal worked was the videos had to be exclusive on YouTube and YouTube would retain 100% of the ad revenue until they have recouped what they put out. As of now, only 23 of the 100+ channels YouTube funded are in the top 1000 channels. We don’t know who is getting cut yet or how they are determining it, but YouTube would hope they continue to make videos and post them to YouTube. In the time being if a channel that has been cut YouTube will continue to take 100% ad revenue from the videos it helped fund.

You may be wondering what kind of channels were funded by YouTube. They weren’t all brand new ideas, some of the channels that have been around for a while included The Onion and Redbull. The top 10 channels in September included:

  1. The Warner Sound
  2. Awesomeness TV
  3. SourceFed
  4. WWE Fan Nation
  5. Redbull
  6. Motor Trend
  7. ENTV
  8. Vice
  9. NOC
  10. Fuse

There are certain series that I watch on YouTube but I still don’t look at YouTube as a source for watching shows or original programming. What are your thoughts on this? Sound off in the comments below.
