If you followed our coverage of 2011’s Phoenix Comicon you’ll remember that we met with Phi 3 comics for a nice interview and that they hooked us up with a couple copies of their new comic, for a review. I admitted that I was never much of a comic book reader but that I was fairly impressed with the premise of the comic and the ideas that Matt and Ben had for the future.
Well, I got a pre-release copy of the third installment of the Spiralmind comic series, today and a request that I read it and do up a review.
The first thing I noticed is that the art style seems to have shifted a little bit. It’s the same overall feel but it seems a little more stylized…a little rougher. Not “bad” rough, more like intentionally rough…As if the artist, Brian Robinson, was stylizing out the darkness the comic series surrounds itself with and portrays.
I’m not going to go into spoilers because I’m not THAT much of an ass but I will tell you that the title of this issue is “Black Market” and takes place, almost entirely, in a bar by that name.
The issue feels like a mix of Underworld, From Dusk Til Dawn and The Exorcist. I won’t go into much detail beyond that – you’ll have to read the comic to see what I’m talking about – but suffice it to say that it’s drawn on a number of supernatural genres to weave together a fairly multifaceted story.
The telling of the story of the protagonist, “Spiralmind” a billionaire engineering genius with a special ops background, continues in this issue with some bits and pieces from the past and some interesting stuff being added to the mix.
Again, I’m not going to go in to spoilers but I will say that, even not being a comic-book person, I enjoyed the read and wouldn’t have any problem recommending this to comic fans.
Spiralmind #3 will be available at the end of August or beginning of September through comicxpress.com and indyplanet.com.
Check it out!
