Why Did it Take Me So Long to Discover How I Met Your Mother?

I’ve heard of this show way before now but I never watched it until a few weeks ago. Why is that? The simple answer, CBS. For the longer version, we will have to go back a few years. In 2005 when the show came out I wasn’t watching much TV but rather playing games and trying to run a small business. I was also young being only two years out of high school. I probably wouldn’t have liked it to much then either.

Flash forward a few years ago to 2008 shortly after Hulu launched. I was addicted, all of these shows on my internetz, no way! That became my source of TV and cable was reserved for the reality TV (not proud of that statement and no it was not Jersey Shore type of shows) and local news watching. With Hulu I have discovered shows that I wouldn’t have watched in the first place and shows that I never want to watch again. But Hulu doesn’t have all the networks on board like CBS so that means no How I Met Your Mother for me.

A co-worker of mine asked if I had watched HIMYM because it’s on Netflix for instant watching. I kind of shrugged him off because from the title I thought it was going to be more of a Parenthood type sitcom that had cameos of Neil Patrick Harris. I’m not a big fan of Parenthood but love NPH. I was told that what I was thinking was completely wrong and and that it was about a group of 20 something friends. After looking it up and seeing the cast I said what the heck let me check it out.

Seriously why am I just seeing this show? I have been powering though the seasons and now I’m up to season five. Yes in only a few weeks I’m at season five! Before you say you have no life I will tell you, I have no life then there was also holidays and being sick that helped me get through that quickly.

So I’ve read online that it’s supposed to be like Friends, I never liked or watched that show so I can’t say if it is or not. What I can say is that it is hilarious and I’m not getting jokes that other people get on reddit that I never got before. Those guys are huge fans of the show! Online there are people that do not like the show saying Ted is a jerk, Lily is the devil and Robin is a whore but isn’t that everyone? I mean they stick together and will do anything to help each other out. I don’t understand why you shouldn’t try to accomplish your dreams or go out of your way for complete strangers all the time. Maybe you don’t agree and I’m just an asshole, it’s my opinion.

Only if networks understood where the market was going and get their shows online faster they can expand their audiences. There have been a few other shows that I liked after they were cancelled because I was finally able to discover it online, usually Netflix. If you haven’t watched it yet, go give a few episodes a try on Netflix and let me know what you think. If you don’t like it tell me why, maybe I’m missing something.
