All the side quests and territorial grabs of previous games return, which represents the series’ grind, but it’s a fun grind. In fact, it’s usually so enjoyable that I accomplish all that stuff first before tackling the campaign, allowing me to become super powerful, making the back half of my play time a cake walk. Volition says they’ve done some re-balancing to try and prevent stuff like that from happening and that it’s something they’ve heard from many gamers.
On the presentation side, the game got really rough in the frame rate department during cutscenes and heavy action, but with an August release, it doesn’t look like it’ll see much cleanup. The series’ loose movement made running super fast feel more awkward than ever. You’ll get over it, though.
By and large, this is more Saints Row. If you enjoyed the games’ progression toward the wacky, you’re gonna have another 30 hours of fun (and funny) game here.
