So, here’s the deal. Chris Roberts helms Cloud Imperium Games, the makers of Star Citizen / Squadron 42 and is looking for some extra loot so they can build their own motion capture studio. To do that, they’re asking for the public’s help in making this thing happen. So why don’t we all chip in a few bucks and make that situation work out?
Want some more details? All right, here’s the situation: at this point, Chris Roberts and his team at CIG have been working on building the greatest space game ever and they’ve promised that they aren’t going to get any pesky publishers involved in the situation because we all know they’ll just fuck the whole thing up, right?
Instead, they’re crowdfunding. They launched a Kickstarter asking for $2 million so they could start working on the game, with help from some investors. The Kickstarter was phenomenally successful, to the point that they had to add tons and tons of stretch goals because of all of the money coming in.
Well, a few days ago they were at just under $8.5 million and decided to add two more stretch goals. Getting to $9 million would grant lifetime ship insurance to all backers and give backers a special space suit. The second stretch goal, hitting $10 million would allow them to build their own mocap studio.
Our big goal before the website is $10 million. That’s a crazy amount of money, but we have a plan for it: $10 million would allow Cloud Imperium to build our own mocap studio rather than hiring out time from someone else. Renting mocap equipment and studio time is expensive: upwards of $35,000 a day, with four hours work for each 30-second segment. Having our own studio would cost more right now but will allow us to produce a lot more content for Star Citizen in the long run! We’ll provide more details very soon, but here’s one thought right now: it would even allow us to mocap a few lucky fans into the finished game!
So what they’re telling us is that they’ll be able to produce the game cheaper and with less extraneous work than before, which means more time and money spent on the release of the game as well as subsequent updates to the game and… wait, did they say they’d mocap fans into the game?! Sure they did.
Look, let’s face it: there’s a shortage of good mocap studios for the games we all love to play. We’d certainly stand to have a company like CIG, who we know has a long track record of making kick-ass games, have one so that they can not only use for themselves, but also rent out to other companies so they’ll have more money to put in to Star Citizen and other future products.
I think it’s one hell of an idea.
Since they’ve announced it, they’ve moved from $8.5 million to $9.25 million and only need another $750k to make this happen. While they haven’t given a deadline, it seems they’re about a month out from launching their new site, which they’ve announced as the drop-dead date for this thing to happen.
So, you aren’t already a backer, I suggest getting over there and getting in on the situation. You’ll be helping to develop what promises to be an amazing game and, at the same time, you’ll get Alpha and Beta access to the game, as long as you’re one of the first 200,000 backers (there’s about 29,000 spots left). Get your ass over to http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/ and make that happen, would ya?
