The Hunger Games Review – Star Wars for Teenage Girls

I took my 13 year-old daughter to the midnight premier of The Hunger Games last night. Every showing was sold out weeks ago and the line stretched around several buildings, with people in tents and lawn chairs blocking traffic. I saw a lot of parents like me who were there with their kids. Teenagers in costumes waved plastic bows and arrows around, and the ratio of girls to guys was probably 4 to 1. I guess teenage girls finally got their Star Wars.

I haven’t seen a movie generate this much hoopla in some time. And while I’m glad I went, the movie is pretty average for the amount of hype it is getting.

‘Man on a Ledge’ Review – Just Jump Already

A great title and a good trailer gave me high hopes for “Man on a Ledge.” It’s a simple enough formula. Take Sam Worthington as the desperate escaped convict, put him on the precarious ledge of a building, add Elizabeth Banks as the haunted negotiator trying to talk him down, and then present it all to us as a taut and clever heist film… Sign me up!

Unfortunately, Man on a Ledge is all premise and no plot. The film is preposterous and silly in equal measure.

TV Review – The Firm – It’s Happening Again

If you’ve been feeling that there just aren’t enough lawyer shows on television, then NBC has a mid-season legal thriller for you. And – bonus – you’ve heard the name before.

The Firm is a weekly series based on the John Grisham-penned, Tom Cruise-helmed legal thriller of the 1990s. Clearly, NBC is banking a lot on the show’s name recognition. They’ve already put in a surprising 22-episode order.

But the truly surprising thing is that the show isn’t half bad.

Rumor – The End of Microsoft Points

A few days ago, we challenged Microsoft to do away with the annoying Microsoft Points currency system that they use on Xbox Live, Zune and Games for Windows. According to the latest rumor out of Redmond, it looks like Microsoft may be rising to that challenge and abandoning Microsoft Points.
