Retailers Are Ruining Video Games

So tonight, Kelly informed me that he was interested in the new open world, zombie-a-thon game Dead Island, but only if he had someone to play co-op with. I offered, right there and then, to pick the game up if we dropped by Best Buy. We talked about how janky the game had been revealed to be in recent reviews and with a 74% GameRankings score, we figured we could probably overlook a lot of the game’s flaws if it had a decent cooperative mode. So we arrived.

And they were sold out.

And so was everyone else.

Game Review – My Country for Facebook and Android

The people from Game Insight – the company who brought us Paradise Island – dropped me an email several weeks ago and told me they were getting ready to release a new game and asked if I would review it for them. I agreed and, after a couple of weeks, they sent me a link to the game, along with a nice press release for our site, so I could download it and install it on my Android for review as well as publicizing the title for them.

I’m only just getting around to reviewing it, for a couple of reasons.

The Indie Game Quick-Pick Vol. 1

The Indie Game Quick-Pick Vol. 1

In a world where Call Of Duty replicas rule the gaming industry, many have been called to stand up for creativity, originality, and humor to develop inspiring or creepy video games. FleshEatingZipper will spread the good word of indie gaming, whether it be awesome or not.

Sometimes simplicity wins over complexity. Sometimes. Today I will be showcasing three different web-based indie games that strive on it’s simplicity. You won’t need a controller or joystiq. You won’t need the latest and greatest graphics card. And lastly, you won’t find violence, sex, or illegal substances in these games. If that sentence didn’t eliminate 85% of our readers, I don’t know what will. I digress — these three games struck a cord with me. Perhaps it’s the odd and unconventional stories the developers wrote. Before I go any deeper and alienate even more readers, let’s jump into the first game! Read the rest of this article…

The First Two Weeks of ‘The Trenches’

The First Two Weeks of ‘The Trenches’

It makes sense that if Scott Kurtz and the Penny Arcade guys are co-inhabiting the same workspace, they’re gonna start churning out some product together. The result is last year’s announcement of The Trenches, a webcomic from the perspective of game testers. The trio write the strip while Kurtz does the artwork (Krahulik assists). News about the strip went dark for almost a year, but it finally emerged from the sea of simulation and we’re treated to what may be a very interesting series.

Minecraft – Revisited [UPDATED WITH VIDEO]

Some time ago, we talked about Minecraft, (Ok, we’ve talked about it a bunch of times but it’s been a while) and how its 8-bit charm is…well…charming.

Back then, the game was pretty limited. The things one could create, the usefulness of the various created objects, etc…It was pretty much mine and build and mine and build and kill a spider and mine and build. These days, though, the world of Minecraft is much bigger and much bolder than it was in those days.

C’mon Now, Deus Ex: Invisible War Wasn’t That Bad. …Was It?

C’mon Now, Deus Ex: Invisible War Wasn’t That Bad. …Was It?

With the impending release of Square-Enix’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution – an RPG/FPS hybrid prequel to my favorite shooter of all time – comes a lot of renewed interest in the series. Well, strike that, interest in the original Deus Ex and a lot of brow-beating for its 2003 follow-up, Invisible War. I enjoyed the sequel for what it was worth, but does it deserve all the disrespect it’s received over the years?

Penny Arcade Unveils New Site Design. So How Is It?

No, that’s not a shot of the new website for the epically successful Penny Arcade empire, that’s what it looked like when I started reading it in high school. For being the vehicle that allows the world to view their comics, the designs have always swayed between ‘meh’ and ‘decent’. Today, the company unveiled the beta for their newest design (version 7.0 for those keeping track), so what does FleshEatingZipper’s resident Penny Arcade fan think? Take a look inside…
