Indie Game Review: Super Smash Land

Anybody who’s anybody has played the original Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64. And you’d all be lying to me if you’ve never had your hands caress the plastic frame of a Gameboy. So what would happen if those two were matched together on a dating service? I’ll tell you what would happen — nothing. They’re incompatible. However, Dan Fornace had the brilliant idea to develop a “demake” of Super Smash Bros. for the Gameboy. Wait, what?

This is Why Xbox Live is Better than PlayStation Network

Many people participated in the “preview disc” program that Xbox Live was running to test out the new disc format. Microsoft sent these users a copy of Halo: Reach to use for testing purposes and you were totally able to keep the game. Read the rest of this article…

Why Is Bethesda Being Such A Jerk To Interplay Over Their Fallout MMO?

Why Is Bethesda Being Such A Jerk To Interplay Over Their Fallout MMO?

This is going to date me, but there was a common expression on the official Fallout 2 boards that went “you’d have to be a FOOL to want FallOut OnLine” primarily because of gameplay/integrity concerns. Well, this week, a court denied Bethesda (makers of The Elder Scrolls and current owner of the Fallout IP) yet another injunction against Interplay, original owner of the IP, in their production of a Fallout MMO. The two have been in a persistent slap fight for the past few years, instigated entirely by Bethesda, and it seems that there’s very little rhyme or reason behind it aside from sheer malice. But first, a little back story…

Burnout Crash Review – Destruction As A Chore

Burnout Crash Review – Destruction As A Chore

As far as racing games went, the Burnout series was fine enough, but take a mixture of fast-paced arcade racing, clever urban and rural environments, and a metagame involving crashing into your opponents and you have a formula for success. The series peaked for me with Burnout 3, which featured an awesome mode called Crash (perfected from the previous game) which set up rolling vehicles in a confined area, set your car as the pinball, and forced you to get creative in the destruction of everything from saloon cars to tankers to achieve rapidly ascending high scores. Their latest iteration, Burnout: Paradise, ditched Crash mode altogether and despite receiving critical raves, just wasn’t my cup of tea. Flash forward to 2011 and developer Criterion announces a $10 Xbox Live Arcade/PlayStation Network game devoted entirely to crashing? Well, let’s just say it got my attention! Unfortunately, in this dedicated solution, they seem to have forgotten what made Crash mode so great in the original games.

OnLive Gives Code For 50% Off Games

OnLive, the rising star of on demand game services, has virally shared a code that will give everyone 50% off of any PlayPass purchase. This is great news for those who’ve been using the service thanks to the free Deus Ex/GameStop advertisement. So what’s the catch? There’s only two cons — you have until midnight to purchase games with the code and you have a choice of 100 titles to choose from. I guess those aren’t really cons per se, but you won’t have all day to think about it!

Oh. You want to know the code? Fine, make me have to find it for you. I see how it is. The promo code is bioshock. You happy now? Good, now let us know what game you decided to purchase!

Gears Of War 3 Takes DLC Too Far

Gears Of War 3 Takes DLC Too Far

There was a time, believe it or not, when games were shipped with full fledged manuals, a cartridge or disc and enough time to finish the game before a sequel was conceived. It wasn’t until the Xbox 360 and PS3 that consumers were introduced to a double edge sword known as downloadable content. The idea of DLC is to help bring a game’s life back from the grave by squeezing more replay value out of it. However, the release of Gears of War 3 shows just how ridiculous DLC can be and why it can turn a good idea into a bad one.

15 Minutes (Or So) With Diablo 3 – With Gameplay Video

As we announced on twitter, we have been given a Diablo 3 beta key (Thanks for hooking that up, Kelly) and will be presenting screenshots, videos and info between now and launch.

As part of that, I installed the beta, fired it up and made a gameplay video which spans from character creation through the end of the first quest, with a little bit of commentary from yours truly.

Check the video, after the jump.

Gears 3 Multiplayer Explored – The Good, The Bad, The Ugly.

Gears of War 3 and multiplayer…Peanut butter and jelly? Peas and Carrots? Captain and Tennille? Yeah, something like that.

Gears 3 picks up the torch carried by its predecessor, which lit the way for so many gamers…And then throws it into a huge vat of kerosene which then boils water which powers a steam turbine which creates electricity and lights up the whole damned city.
