X-COM: UFO Defense Is The Best Game Ever Made, Period.

The whole world seemed to be on a collective alien/UFO/mysterious kidnapping high in the early 90s. From The X-Files to “investigations” by Unsolved Mysteries and Alien Autopsy, we all seemed hellbent to believe that there really were aliens out there. This game was described to me by a friend over dinner (after watching The Lion King, bizarre, right?) as a strategy game in which you built a team of soldiers and sent them around the world to combat alien threats. Seventeen years later, X-COM is now long-departed from an era of novelty in strategy games, standing alone, having withstood the test of time and executed so well that it simply couldn’t be replicated.

Active Games are Good for Kids

This is pretty interesting and cool. Studies were done at Brigham Young University and the University of Massachusetts where they test 39 boys and girls playing active video games or “exergames” for 10 minutes and found that the 10 minutes was the same amount of exercise as a 3 mile walk on a treadmill. Favimon – I Choose You!

This is pretty cool if you’re into the whole web scene. It’s a nifty little spin off Pokemon but instead of battling Pokemon you battle Favicons! So far I have taken down the top 10 Alexa ranked sites then didn’t know what else to do with it. Go check out Favimon though and beware of the mighty Google Favicon, it’s a monster!

2000 Was The Best SimCity Game Ever, Period.

2000 Was The Best SimCity Game Ever, Period.

It’s hard to believe now, but SimCity launched a whole new genre of strategy games when it debuted in 1989 – the “fun” simulation. Developer/gaming god Will Wright (you know him nowadays for The Sims and Spore) decided that he was having more fun with level editors than he was in actual games, so he set out to create the original SimCity. Believe it or not, at some point the idea of playing a game in which you built and managed a city was pretty lame, but Will changed everyone’s minds. It’s the sequel, though – SimCity 2000 – that perfected the whole formula and in the 17 years since it released, it has never been surpassed.

‘Angry Birds’ Flocking Towards Facebook

‘Angry Birds’ Flocking Towards Facebook

If there’s one outlet Angry Birds hasn’t been plastered all over, it’s facebook. All that’s about to change now that the infamous bird on pig game will be available to play on the popular social network this March. Will it be the same game though? Apparently not, based on what Switched found out. The game will use social elements to “collaborate” with users and that the pigs will have a larger role. Great.

Can you imagine having to take turns flinging birds at even more bastardized pigs? Sorry, I don’t have that kind of patience.

Game Review: Prey

Game Review: Prey

I have to admit, Prey and I have had an awful relationship. We met at E3 2005 where she showed off her crazy, world twisting, portal-generating technicals. A year later, we went on a demo date and we made the rounds at least a dozen or two times and I was blown away. When it came to commit at retail though, I just couldn’t pull the trigger. Well, I found her number recently, the price was right ($19.99 on Xbox Games on Demand), and my lifestyle met with hers for a time. Did five years ruin the chemistry?
